Three thousand years before the Egyptians began preserving their dead in the form of mummies, a people called the Chinchorro who lived on the coast of Chile had developed an elaborate technique for mummification.  We don’t know much about the Chinchorro, who lived more than five thousand years ago, but one Vermonter has set out to learn more.  John Van Hoesen, is associate professor of geology and environmental studies at Green Mountain College.  He’s just received a Fulbright Grant to investigate the Chinchorro mummies.  He spoke with VPR’s Jane Lindholm about his research.
