Weinberger To Announce Burlington’s Plan For Champlain Parkway

Burlington Mayor Miro Weinberger will announce Thursday afternoon his proposal for a long-delayed highway bypass in the southern part of Vermont’s largest city.

The highway was originally planned – and partially built – as an extension of Interstate 189. It used to be referred to as the Southern Connector and now is known as the Champlain Parkway.

Weinberger says the new route between Pine Street and Battery Street would avoid downtown Burlington traffic.

Weinberger is expected to lay out his plans alongside Vermont Secretary of Transportation Brian Searles.

The state has given the nod to the Parkway’s route from Interstate 189’s north to Main Street.

But earlier this year Burlington’s City Council voted to seek alternative routes following public concerns about the Parkway’s traffic and its environmental impact on downtown.

The city’s plan will have to go through the state’s Act 250 process, and if the bypass is built the city would have to contribute a certain percentage of the costs.
