Dale Bergdahl was a professor of forest pathology at UVM for 29 years.  And he’s an expert in butternut canker, a fungus killing butternut trees in alarming numbers.  Bergdahl is spearheading Vermont’s participation in a multi-state effort to identify disease-resistant butternut trees.  The goal is to create a grove of healthy trees that can help restore the tree in the United States.  The other day he and Vermont Edition host Jane Lindholm went for a walk in the woods.

Note: If you think you know of a healthy butternut tree in relatively close proximity to other butternuts, you’re asked to send location information and a brief note to Dale Bergdahl at dale.bergdahl@uvm.edu
