VPR Presents a speech by Iraqi Ambassador Samir Sumaida’i, "Democracy-Building in Post-Transition Iraq," sponsored by the Vermont Council on World Affairs and Saint Michael’s College.

Iraq’s ambassador to the United States, Samir Shakir Mahmood Sumaida’ie, is visiting Vermont this week at the invitation of the Vermont Council on World Affairs.

In speech Monday night at Saint Michael’s College in Colchester, the ambassador discussed Iraq’s experience under the rule of Saddam Hussein, the lessons learned from the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2002, and the effort to build democratic institutions in the country in the past few years as violence has ebbed. Sumaida’ie also commented on how the invasion of Iraq compares with current operations in Libya, and draw clear distinctions between the two, though he is supportive of both.
