Vermont House is considering legislation that would change the way the
Department of Education is structured. Currently,
it is an autonomous entity not attached to a state agency. That means the
Governor does not have the ability to name its Commissioner.

The chairman of
the Vermont State Board of Education is stepping down. Tom James, a
retired IBM executive, has served a six-year term on the board and will attend
his final monthly meeting on September 15th.
