VPR’s Jane Linhdolm talks with Vermont’s Labor Commissioner and an attorney with Vermont Legal Aid about the solvency of the state’s Unemployment Insurance Fund.
The Douglas Administration and
Democratic leaders at the Statehouse have failed to reach an agreement
on a
plan to bail out the state’s Unemployment Insurance Fund.
Vermont could be forced to borrow as much as $200 million
this year to keep its unemployment insurance fund solvent. But Senate President Peter Shumlin is optimistic that a compromise can be found to shore up the fund.
Lawmakers have so far failed to craft a compromise on how to shore up
the
state’s unemployment fund. If
the Legislature can’t find a fix this year, the state will have to
borrow more money
from the federal government to pay jobless benefits.
