Vermont utilities are encountering some resistance as they
roll out new wireless smart meters. Officials say about 5 percent
of consumers have so far chosen not to have the devices installed. But
officials expect that "opt out" rate to drop as the technology is deployed
around the state.
Vermont’s two largest electric utilities have
sued Entergy-Vermont Yankee over cooling tower failures at the nuclear power
plant more than four years ago. The utilities say Yankee failed to follow
standard utility practice to inspect and maintain the tower.
Three Vermont utilities have finalized an agreement to install
"smart grid" electric technology and to expand broadband computer service. Green
Mountain Power, Central Vermont Public Service and Vermont Telephone will work
together.
