All
five members of the Vermont Supreme Court have been elected by lawmakers to
serve another 6 year term on the bench. The approval followed a process that is quite different from judicial review systems used in many other states.
A
cost-saving proposal that would restructure the state’s five different courts into a unified
system
overseen by the Vermont Supreme Court is moving through the Legislature. But there’s disagreement over the future role of side
judges in the plan.
Chief
Justice Paul Reiber is urging the Senate Judiciary Committee to approve a
plan
that would consolidate administration of state courts under the Supreme
Court.
A lawyer for convicted murderer Brian Rooney told the Vermont Supreme
Court today that Rooney should
receive a new trial. Rooney
was convicted in the 2006 murder of 21 year old University of Vermont
student Michelle Gardner-Quinn.

Supreme Court will hear an appeal of the murder conviction of Brian Rooney who
was convicted of raping and murdering a University of Vermont student.
The Vermont
Supreme Court says it has told all judiciary employees in the state to take 12
unpaid days off before June 2010, the end of the 2010 fiscal year.
