The Vermont Health
Department has agreed to further investigate the possible health risks of a
closed asbestos mine, following criticism over an earlier report that
erroneously found a higher-than-expected incidence of lung cancer among nearby
residents.
State
and federal agencies estimate it will cost more than $200 million to
clean up hazardous waste from an asbestos mine in northern Vermont. The
government has filed claims in state court and in bankruptcy court as it tries
to get the money from the mine’s former owners.
