The precarious situation in Afghanistan is more than just a news story in Vermont. 1,800 Vermont National Guardsmen and women are preparing for deployment to that country in the coming months. And as the military and political situation there intensifies, another Vermonter will play a key role in the region’s future. Part-time Townshend resident Peter Galbraith has been named as the UN’s second-in-command in Afghanistan. We’ll talk with him about the coming surge in both military and civilian efforts and about what Vermont’s soldiers can expect there. (Listen)

Also on the program, Valley News political editor John Gregg examines Governor John Lynch’s announcement that he’ll approve same-sex marriage in New Hampshire, if the Legislature makes some amendments to the bill. We’ll talk about the political pressure Lynch faces from both sides of the aisle as New Hampshire appears likely to joining other New England states in adopting same-sex marriage. (Listen)
