Nearly 300 bridges across the
state were damaged or destroyed by Tropical Storm Irene. Some were historic
covered bridges… or the iconic metal trusses built after the flood of 1927. A
short video of the Bartonsville covered bridge collapsing went viral on YouTube
shortly after it was posted, and has become one of the lasting images of the

underway, we’ll be looking at historic preservation of these bridges, and how
to design and build bridges to last. Joining us are Scott Newman, the Historic Preservation Officer at the
Agency of Transportation, and Eric Hernandez, an assistant professor in
civil engineering at UVM who specializes in structural engineering.

Also on the program, Burlington artist Gillian Klein was born and raised in New York City. Her large
canvases reflect that past-dreamscapes of a foggy, dark, wet Gotham,
like visions seen through the rain-streaked rear window of a yellow cab. As
