Vermont is bracing for the biggest National Guard deployment since World War II. As many as 1,800 citizen soldiers expect to leave for Afghanistan late this year and early next. Their absence will mean sacrifices not only for their families and the soldiers themselves, but for the civilian employers and work places they leave behind. On this episode of Vermont Edition our guests are Col. Will Roy, Commander of the soon-to-be-deployed 86th Mountain Infantry Brigade, and David J. Wheel, Director of the Vermont Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve. We’ll talk with them about the rights and obligations of departing Guard members and their employers, and about how both can prepare for the coming work force shortages.(Listen)

Also on the program, environmental reporter Candy Page talks about the coming of spring. (Listen)

And Noelle Mackay, a guest on our program last week about community planning, returns with a post script to that show. (Listen)
