Many Vermonters muddled their way through Monday without
internet service or the ability to make long distance phone calls. The outage was due to a failure in the
telecommunications network company, Level 3.
This is the third time in the past three weeks that the network has
failed, including an outage of about a half hour Tuesday. We talk with Chris Campbell, the
Telecommunications Director for Vermont’s
Public Service Department about how the state is responding. And, Dartmouth Sociology Professor Denise
Anthony joins us to discuss the broader implications for society as we all
become more dependent on technology. (Listen)

Also, this week Governor Jim Douglas signed legislation to
officially recognize Juneteenth as a holiday.
Juneteeth recognizes African-American emancipation from slavery, and is
celebrated on the third Saturday June. The
director of the Vermont Juneteenth Committee, Shirley Boyd-Hill, joins us to
talk about the holiday’s history and how Vermonters plan to commemorate the
day. (Listen)
