They’re camped at our borders. The Asian longhorned beetle and the emerald ash borer. The Hemlock wooly adelgid, butternut canker and anthracnose are already here. These are just some of the threats to our trees and forests. Add development by humans and it’s easy to see that Vermont’s forests are facing serious challenges.

We talk with forest ecologist Charlie Cogbill and UVM professor Bill Keeton about the state of our tree populations and we look at the importance of our forests in relation to the rest of our environment.

Plus, Montpelier voters have approved a $2.75 million bond for the creation of a new wood-fired heating system for the downtown area. Montpelier Director of Planning and Community Development Gwen Hallsmith updates us on the project’s timetable and how it will impact heating costs in the capital city.

And, we head to Summer School. Our weekly series taps local experts to help us learn about warm-weather skills and hobbies. In this installment, we learn how to play bocce from Zander Ponzo, president of the Burlington Bocce Club.
