In scope and duration, this spring’s flooding placed unprecedented demands on both state officials and volunteer organizations who provide relief and services to people affected.
Over an 80 day period, Vermont Emergency Management and the Red Cross dealt with flash flood events in Central and Northern Vermont, and ongoing flooding along Lake Champlain. Additionally, the Red Cross responded to a major fire in Brattleboro.
We talk with Vermont Emergency Management Deputy Director Peter Coffey and Larry Crist, Regional Executive of the Vermont and New Hampshire Valley Region of the American Red Cross about how services are provided, the challenges they faced in responding to the disasters and the lessons they’ve learned.
