Medical marijuana has been legal in Vermont
for six years, yet there’s still no legal way to buy it. But Senate bill 226 would change that. The bill would allow the creation of up to five
nonprofit medical marijuana dispensaries in the state. Late last week the House Government Operations committee voted the bill out of committee, with a vote of 3 to 2. We hear from Senator Hinda Miller who is one
of the lead sponsors of the bill, and we also hear from Senator Randy Brock who
voted against the bill. Also, we check
in with Vermont’s Public Safety
commissioner Tom Tremblay. He says the
bill would be costly to implement and would put Vermont
at further odds with federal law.
Also in the program, Sen. Harold Giard of Addison County is sponsoring a bill that would require Vermont slaughterhouses to be inspected by the U.S. Humane Society. We talk with Giard about his frustration over the Bushway slaughterhouse scandal and why he thinks this measure would prevent future abuse of animals before they are slaughtered.
And, we learn about how the Iranian New Year, called Nowruz,
will be celebrated this weekend.
