This year Democrats will have their biggest majority ever in the Vermont House – and some of the toughest economic times. The first item on the agenda when the Legislature convenes is a $60-plus million shortfall in the budget passed last year. We’ll talk with Morrisville Democrat Shap Smith, the presumptive House Speaker, about what he hopes to accomplish – and how – in the coming session.

We’ll also be taking your calls and e-mails. If you have questions for Rep. Smith you can email them before the show by clicking here.

Also on the program, a live performance by Twist of the Wrist, an eclectic Vermont band that plays old and new music with a centuries-old flair. The music includes a surpising combination of instruments: Liz Thompson plays hurdy-gurdy and sings, Barbara Wager plays flute and soprano sax, and VPR’s own Robert Resnik plays button accordion and guitar.
