Senator Bernie Sanders wants a ban on off-shore oil drilling and to raise the fuel efficiency standard for cars to 55 miles per gallon by the year 2030. The idea may gain momentum as frustration grows over the handling and aftermath of BP oil spill. Sanders is also heralding the first phases of the new federal health care law that go into effect this month, including a one-time payment for thousands of Vermonters who rely on Medicare prescription drug benefits.
