‘Tis the season to be… shopping?
The connection between shopping and Christmas is undeniable: wish lists
are compiled for gadgets and gear, extra sales fliers slip out of the
Sunday newspaper, traffic clogs the entrances near malls and town
centers. For businesses, December can be a make or break month in the
retail calendar. For shoppers, buying and receiving gifts can fill a
house with joyful satisfaction, or it can leave one questioning the
point of all that spending. We examine the economics and culture of
consumers in the holiday season with Geri Anne Higgans, marketing
director at the University Mall in South Burlington, and Hardwick writer
Judith Levine, author of "Not Buying It: My Year Without Shopping."

Skip Vallee, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary
Also in the program, Skip Vallee has returned home to Vermont after
serving two years as ambassador to the Slovak Republic. Jane talks with
him about the foreign policy questions between the U.S. and Slovakia,
and what it was like to serve as the United States’ top diplomat there.

Fruitcake!
And we pay homage to a food that (for some) is synonymous with the
Christmas season: fruitcake. NECI chef Jean Yves Vandeville describes
the rich history and ingredients that make fruitcake a food to be revered.
