Tom Dooley – Revisited

The recording of Tom Dooley by the Kingston Trio was one of the biggest selling hit singles of 1958 and one that sparked a popular folk music revival which continues to this day. This week Joel Najman’s My Place program traces the history of the real-life individual who is the subject of the song, and presents a series of recordings of songs that are predecessors of the Tom Dooley song, one dating back to 1929.

Singer and songwriter Joe South passed away unexpectedly at age 72 at his Georgia home on September 5, 2012. Joe South’s music has been described as a potent mixture of country and soul, oftentimes with important social messages as typified by his Grammy award winning "Games People Play". Joe South also distinguished himself as a first-call session guitarist, playing on major hits by Bob Dylan, Simon & Garfunkel, Aretha Franklin and others. The celebration of the life in music of lyricist Hal David continues for second week on Joel Najman’s My Place program with an hour of popular songs co-written by Mr David, who passed away at age 91 on Sept 1, 2012. Dionne Warwick, Gene Pitney and the 5th Dimension are among the artists who’s major Hal David-written hits are featured on this week’s program.
