A
well-known defense attorney from Rutland died on Monday. Fifty-four-year-old
Mathew Harnett, who represented some of the most high profile criminal cases in
Rutland County, battled cancer.
Nearly 100 people gathered in Rutland early Saturday
morning to celebrate the opening of a new multi-use bike path in the city. It was the culmination of a 7 year-long
community wide effort launched during the city’s Creative Economy Initiative.
For
years Castleton’s town offices were located in a historic building in
the heart of the village. But mold and other safety concerns forced a move into temporary quarters
last year. Local residents remain split over whether to build a new town office
or restore the old one and next Tuesday they’ll vote on the issue.
Rutland’s winter farmers’
market will kick off its new season Saturday in a much larger location. Organizers are excited because it means more
vendors can take part. And city
officials are pleased because the market is moving into an old warehouse that’s
been vacant for years.
Green Mountain Power
has been gearing up for Hurricane Sandy for a week assessing what parts of the
state may be hardest hit, where to move resources and how to best utilize
outside crews coming to help.
About 15 protesters demonstrated
at Green Mountain College Friday in a last ditch effort to save Bill and Lou – a
pair of oxen that have worked on the campus farm for ten years.
