Advocate says sex offender law won’t work

An advocate for victims of domestic and sexual violence says an ordinance being considered by the city of Rutland that would require sex offenders to live far from schools, playgrounds and day care centers won’t work.

Karen Tronsgard-Scott of the Vermont Network Against Domestic and Sexual Violence says moving sex offenders away from probation officers and community support can lead to isolation and a higher risk of re-offense.

She says that by making it harder for sex offenders to find places to live it drives up the likelihood they will commit another offense.

The Rutland Board of Aldermen is due to vote today on a so-called "Child Safety Ordinance."

The city of Barre recently adopted a similar ordinance.
