Governor Jim Douglas and about half of the state’s mayors gathered in Montpelier yesterday to promote a program that encourages Vermonters to find less-polluting ways to get back and forth to work.

The program is known as the Way to Go Commuter Challenge. One of the coordinators is Bryan Davis of the Chittenden County Metropolitan Planning Organization.

(Davis) “Last year we had nearly 2,000 people save 243,000 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions. This year’s goal we’ve set at reducing or saving up to 500,000 pounds. And we’ve had quite a good response from people registering, so I think we’re going to reach that mark.”

(Host) The program helps commuters find new ways of getting to work. Those include carpooling, taking public transportation, walking or bicycling, and working from home.

The event runs Monday through Friday next week.
