In Middlebury, the Select Board has passed a motion recognizing the co-designer of the Emma Willard Monument.

Marion Guild and Peter Zwick built the monument 71 years ago to commemorate the famous champion of women’s rights and education. Willard is famous for starting a girls school in Troy, N.Y.

But Guild, unlike her boss, was never recognized for her role. The Addison County Independent reports that Guild remained silent when Zwick took all the credit when the structure was erected in 1941 on the town green.

Guild, who is now 94 and still living in Vermont, has finally received credit for her work.
