The U.S. Air Force is planning to hold a hearing next month in South Burlington to discuss the possible basing of its next generation fighter at the Burlington International Airport.

The Vermont Air National Guard base in South Burlington is one of five installations across the country being considered to host the fighter, the F-35.

The F-35 is said to be noisier than the F-16s it is designed to replace.

South Burlington City Manager Chuck Hafter tells the Burlington Free Press he expects a big crowd for the hearing.

Last month the city council asked the Air Force for a fly-by of the new jet so its sound could be compared with the F-16s.

The hearing is scheduled for April 19.
