A federal appeals court that covers Vermont, New York and Connecticut says the Defense of Marriage Act is unconstitutional.

That’s the law that defines a marriage as a union between a man and a woman.

The Second Circuit Court of Appeals says that discriminates against gay and lesbian couples who are married because they’re treated as single by the federal government.

The U.S. Supreme Court is expected to ultimately decide the issue.
