Three years ago today, New Hampshire awoke to shocking news: The Old Man of the Mountain had fallen from its perch in Franconia Notch.

Since then, the state has heard a lot of ideas about how to memorialize its fallen symbol.

It has installed viewfinders to give visitors an idea of what the profile looked like, and tonight, a committee formed to preserve the Old Man’s legacy will pick artists to propose a sculpture to be placed in the Notch.

The Old Man of the Mountain Legacy Committee will name three finalists from a pool of 31 sculptors.
