As Snow Melts, Vermont Communities Brace For Flooding

(Host) With rain, warm temperatures and melting snow in the forecast, Vermont cities and towns are bracing for the possibility of river ice jams and flooding.

The forecast calls for an inch and a half of rain in southern Vermont and a half inch in northern Vermont tomorrow, with temperatures reaching into the mid to upper 40s, which will lead to snow melt, and rising river levels.

The biggest threat of flooding are ice jams, when ice breaks up on rivers and then clogs water flow.

The National Weather Service in Burlington says that while the threat of flooding is low to moderate in most areas, ice jams are unpredictable, and communities need to monitor their rivers.
