The investigation into last week’s explosion in a boiler at the University of Vermont is being put on hold while asbestos is removed from the boiler room.

UVM has hired a firm to remove all the asbestos from the boiler room of Gutterson Fieldhouse. UVM spokesman Enrique Corredera says investigators will return to try to determine the cause of Thursday’s explosion after that work is completed.

Asbestos exposure has been linked to lung cancer and other illnesses.

One worker was severely injured in the blast. Corredera says the condition of the worker, who has declined to be identified, is improving markedly and is now listed as good.
