Residents in the small Windham County town of Athens say they can no longer afford their public library, and they have voted to disband it.

Athens says it’s hard to maintain the library in a difficult economy with few grants and other resources. The library was established in 1895.

The Brattleboro Reformer reports that some residents are considering starting up their own free library with donated books.
