(Host) AT&T says it will upgrade its wireless broadband network in Vermont this spring to make it faster and more reliable.

AT&T took over the old Unicel network earlier this year. Kate MacKinnon of AT&T says the new system will make it easier for consumers to use a variety of new “smart phones.”

(MacKinnon) “You know, these days, people are doing a heck of a lot more than just making phone calls on their wireless phones. They’re surfing the Internet, they’re reading their email. They’re downloading Excel files or Word files. And, you know what, they just want fast speed.”

(Host) MacKinnon says AT&T expects to have its new network in place by the end of the year.

The company also plans to build 15 new cell towers around the state to improve mobile telephone service in areas that either don’t have it or have weak signals.
