Connecticut’s attorney general says New England residents have been swindled out of almost $86 million-dollars by power generators.

Richard Blumenthal said Monday he is launching an antitrust investigation into those generators and ISO-New England, which operates the region’s power grid.

He says the generators were paid under a federal rule for supplying electricity when needed. But, he alleges that 108 times between 2006 and 2009 they failed to supply the region any power when asked.

Blumenthal also has asked the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to compel the generators to return the money.

Spokeswomen for both FERC and ISO New England said they were unaware of the allegations, and had no immediate comment.
