Attorney General says tax bills are public

The Vermont Attorney General’s Office says property tax bills and records sent to towns on behalf of property owners are open to public.

That’s the same opinion of the Tax Department but opposite of the Secretary of State.

But some town officials are concerned about releasing any personal financial information.

It used to be that the state payments, meant to help people reduce their property taxes, were sent directly to taxpayers. This year it was sent to towns, which then used that payment to reduce property taxes.

In some towns the payment was listed on property tax bills. Others have been keeping it secret.

Some fear the information could be used by telemarketers or others.
