When the state Attorney General’s office released a report on the problem of obesity last November, most people focused on the recommendation of a soda tax. The rest of Vermont’s Healthy Weight Initiative report was largely ignored.

Vermont Health Director Dr. Harry Chen applauds the comprehensive approach that the report takes in addressing the causes of the problem. Chen says a cultural change is needed to stem the rise in the obesity rate, that has doubled in Vermont since 1990.

Attorney General Bill Sorrell recommends creating incentives for those on food assistance programs to purchase more fruits and vegetables and providing revolving loans for small grocers to purchase refrigeration units to change their food mix to be more healthy.
