Auditor says casino gambling could help Vermont

Vermont’s state auditor says the state should get into the gambling game, now that it’s facing multi-million dollar budget gaps as a result of the recession.

In a recent letter to lawmakers, Auditor Thomas Salmon said a state-owned casino in Killington or another resort could raise money to help pay for repair of roads and bridges. He doesn’t have a proposal in hand, but Salmon says the idea’s worth considering.

Officials in the Town of Killington and at Killington ski resort say they’re open to the idea but want more details.

But Gov. Jim Douglas says he won’t pursue the idea, and lawmakers have yet to show any interest in it.

State Attorney General William Sorrell says he wouldn’t bet his salary that the proposed casino will ever get built.
