A state Senate candidate who asked for a recount in the Chittenden County Senate district dropped her request after votes were recounted in the city of Burlington.

Rep. Denise Barnard, a Richmond Democrat, had hoped to move to one of six seats representing Vermont’s most populous county in the Senate, but came in seventh in a race with 14 candidates.

She was initially counted as 417 votes behind Tim Ashe, a Burlington Democrat/Progressive who ended up in sixth place.

County Clerk Diane Lavallee says that after Burlington’s votes were recounted, Barnard had gained 14, but Ashe had gained 24. Barnard on Thursday asked that what was to be a county-wide recount be stopped, and conceded the race.
