The city of Barre is getting a boost from a $1.8 million Neighborhood Stabilization Grant.

The money will be used to purchase and demolish the Old Brooks Building and the former All Fired Up property and then clean-up the sites. Those projects will allow the city to move forward with plans to re-develop Merchants Row with new landscaping and sidewalks.

The Central Vermont Community Land Trust will also get nearly $1 million to buy a foreclosed apartment building and rehabilitate it.

The grants come from federal money released to response to the mortgage foreclosure crisis. Vermont received $19 million from the program.
