The Barre City Council is asking for public input about a proposal to prevent sex offenders from living within 1,000 feet of schools or municipal parks and playgrounds.
The Barre City Council is planning a public hearing for 7:15 p.m. Tuesday.
Barre Mayor Thomas Lauzon initially proposed a 1,500-foot buffer had daycare centers on the list, but it would have effectively prevented sex offenders from living anywhere in the city.
The proposal would not affect the 45 registered sex offenders already living in Barre, but it would make it harder for them to move. And if the offenders were convicted of another sex offense it could force them to move.
A similar proposal is being considered in the city of Rutland.
