Bellows Falls dam malfunctions

A gate on a Connecticut River dam has malfunctioned and won’t close.

Engineers from Vermont and New Hampshire are monitoring the hydroelectric plant in Bellows Falls.

With the gate stuck open, more river water than planned is flowing through the dam.

Officials say the water level above the dam is lower than usual.

Vermont’s top dam safety expert says the concern is that if the river level is reduced too much, sediment could be stirred in the reservoir above the dam.

The heavy rains of the past day have helped ease any problems because they are keeping water in the reservoir.

There’s no word on how long it will take to fix the dam’s gate.
