The Bennington Battle Monument has been defaced by vandals who spray-painted red graffiti on it.

Bennington Police say the damage to the 306-foot obelisk was reported Thursday, after someone spotted the anti-Bush graffiti and an anarchy symbol on the monument.

Bennington Town Clerk Timothy Corcoran says he may ask the state to post a $10,000 reward for the arrest and conviction of the vandals. State Senator Vincent Illuzzi says the damage to the beloved Bennington landmark is the equivalent of a “mortal sin.”
