Bennington hospital lays off 60

Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington has laid off 60 employees and slashed hours for 30 others to cope with a projected $1.3 million deficit.

A spokesman for the hospital – which laid off three executives last week – said Thursday’s moves would cut expenses by about $5 million. Kevin Robinson wouldn’t identify the jobs being cut, saying the goal was to preserve the hospital’s core services as much as possible.

In March, the hospital revealed a $6.1 million swing in its budget projections, prompting numerous cost-cutting measures. CEO Harvey Yorke resigned in March, interim chief financial officer George Brisson was let go after that and then last week, the three other executives’ jobs were eliminated, the Bennington Banner reported.
