A Bennington manufacturer is laying off 55 more workers as the country’s auto industry continues to struggle.

The latest round of cuts at NSK Steering Systems America brings the total number of layoffs to about 120 since October.

The company produces steering columns for automobiles, including the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla and the Mercedes M-class.

Human Resources Manager Gregory Laurin says the layoffs were driven by the shut down of a Mercedes Benz U.S. International plant in Tuscaloosa, Ala. for at least six weeks.

NSK started notifying employees on Friday and will continue on Monday.

Laurin says the workers will be offered their jobs back if orders increase.
