School officials in Bennington are defending a $57,000 sign outside the new Mount Anthony Union Middle School.

While some have questioned the expenditure, Superintendent Wesley Knapp says it was part of a project that came in under budget.

The double-sided sign has two, color LCD screens that can change messages instantly with a wireless connection to the school.

Officials say it will be used to announce school news and events and other information for the community.
