The Bennington Select Board is dropping its opposition to a Bennington Bypass plan that doesn’t include direct access to a proposed welcome center for some travelers on U.S. Route 7.

The proposed welcome center would be in the middle of an interchange between Route 7 and Vermont Route 279.

Some Bennington officials were upset when they learned that travelers coming to town from the south won’t have direct access to the center.

Transportation Agency officials says the total cost of a ramp would be $4 million to $5 million and require replacing a bridge on Route 7.

Direct access from all directions will be provided when the project is completed several years from now.
