The city of Berlin, New Hampshire, which is getting a new federal prison, is considering charging the government some pricey sewer fees.

In addition to assessing the federal Bureau of Prisons the cost of upgrading the city’s sewer system to handle the new medium security prison, the city is considering charging the bureau a $3.6 million connection fee that would cover a share of the existing facilities.

The total bill for the bureau would be over $15 million.

Prison bureau officials have said they’ve never had to pay for infrastructure improvements, such as water and sewer, in any other community where they have built a prison.
