The Board of Education in Berlin, N.H., has voted to close an elementary school at the end of the upcoming school year.

The decision regarding Bartlett School was made in the name of cost savings and in response to a declining school population.

Board Chairman Mitch Couture says the board realized the tough economic times the city is facing, and decided that closing the school was a reasonable step to take.

Another factor in the board’s decision is the declining student population the schools are seeing. Couture said the student population at Bartlett dropped roughly 100 students between this year and last year.

Berlin has two other public elementary schools.
