Big ski developer’s plans prompt worries

There’s growing concern in the northeastern Vermont town of Burke that a developer’s plans for a big expansion at the Burke Mountain Ski Area are out of scale with the area.

But there’s also disagreement about whether the town should, or could, demand that the Ginn Co.’s planned $100 million development be scaled back.

Ginn bought Burke Mountain in 2005, and has announced plans for more than 1,000 homes and condominiums, a spa, restaurants, shops and other facilities.

The Florida-based company specializes in high-end resorts, and some locals fear that, too, may be out of character in a part of Vermont where incomes are modest.
