The head of Vermont’s Roman Catholic diocese says the news that Pope Benedict XVI is resigning "causes sadness in our hearts" but says the diocese will continue to be inspired by his teachings.

The 85-year-old pope announced Monday that he lacks the strength to fulfill his duties and will resign Feb. 28, becoming the first pontiff in 600 years to do so.

Bishop Salvatore Matano, head of the Vermont diocese, said in a statement that the announcement demonstrates the pope’s extraordinary love of the church.

In a statement released to the Burlington Free Press, Matano said the diocese will give thanks for the pope and his dedication to the church and continue to pray for him.
