A big weekend for Franconia, New Hampshire’s Bode Miller. He picked up a gold medal yesterday in the men’s super-combined. It was an amazing run down the slalom portion of the race, after finishing seventh in the down hill portion. Miller picked up a silver in the Super-G on Friday, that goes with a bronze he won in the downhill, for three medals in this games.
Add that to the two silver medals he picked up in Salt Lake City, and that puts Miller in a tie for second on the all-time Alpine list for men’s medals.
Competing alongside Miller, 24-year-old Andrew Weibrecht of Lake Placid, New York. Weibrecht pulled off a great race in the men’s Super G to pick up a bronze medal, his first. He also finished in 11th place in the super combined.
In the ladies 15k cross country event, Caitlin Compton, formerly of Warren finished 43rd, and Liz Stephen of Montpelier gets 58th place.
Two locals took part in the women’s downhill super G over the weekend. Leanne Smith of Conway, New Hampshire finished 18th, in a race won by Lindsey Vonn. Chelsea Marshall of Pittsfield, Vermont raced, but wiped out and did not finish.
In ski jumping, Peter Frenette of Saranac Lake and Nick Alexander of Lebanon, New Hampshire both qualified in the individual long hill, but did make it past the first round. Both will take part in the team event today.
Yesterday, in the men’s 15k biathlon, Tim Burke of Paul Smiths, posted his best finish yet, 18th place.
In competition today, Andy Newell of Shaftsbury will take part in the team cross country sprints, after a disappointing finish in the individual round last week.
