The body of a 22 year old U.S. Marine killed in Afghanistan is home in Vermont. A motorcade carried the body of Cpl. Ian Muller, of North Danville, from the Burlington International Airport to St. Johnsbury, along roads lined with people paying their respects.

The Legislature recessed briefly while the procession passed in front of the Statehouse and lawmakers watched.

A wake for Muller is scheduled for Friday in St. Johnsbury and the funeral is set for Saturday.

Muller was killed in combat last week in Afghanistan’s Helmand Province. He joined the Marines in December 2007. Muller was a member of the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force, based in Camp Lejeune, N.C.

His family described him as an extreme athlete who enjoyed skiing, snowboarding, bodybuilding, soccer and track.

Four Vermonters have been killed in Afghanistan since combat operations began there in 2001. Since 2003 another 27 Vermonters have died in Iraq and one Vermonter died in Kuwait while preparing to go to Iraq.
